A Euregio is a cross-border region made up of the sum of the border regions of neighboring states, thus establishing and institutionalizing it as an independent, transnational entity within the European context. The Lake Constance region also meets the criteria of this definition. In the preamble of the "International Mission Statement for Lake Constance", which was adopted by the German-Swiss Spatial Planning Commission in 1982, the Lake Constance region is referred to as "a landscape of European prestige favored by nature". This landscape association is managed through a multitude of cross-border political and economic initiatives.
