Centuries ago, when navigable waters represented the best transport links, the region around Lake Constance was a cultural and historical entity; it was a core area of ​​the United Kingdom. The same origin, the same language and the openness to all external influences were formative elements. Great was the charisma of the abbeys of Reichenau and St. Gallen, which did not know today existing barriers. Later, borders formed between Germany, Austria and Switzerland, borders that meet in Lake Constance. Rail and road gained in importance, the lake became the separating element. These were difficult years with two world wars, which clouded the good neighborly relations for some time. The unique landscape, however, the habitat of Lake Constance, be it German, Austrian or Swiss, remained despite all confusion a unity with common roots, which found more than 1,000 years deep. The pictorial stamp of the three riparian states testifies to the changed climate in relations; she documents that new forces are trying to bridge the gap from history to the present.
