The countries of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) decided at the meeting of their "Post" commission on 15 April 1975 in Malaga-Torremolinos to select the theme "Monuments" for the European brands in 1978. The German Federal Post Office chose the Old Town Halls of Bamberg, Regensburg and Esslingen am Neckar. The Old Town Hall in Esslingen was built around 1430 as a purchase and wheelhouse. Seat of the city administration, it was temporarily after the great city fire in 1701 and for a long time after 1803 Esslingen lost its imperial immediacy and Württemberg seized the imperial city hall. Even today, the municipal council meetings are held in the Old Town Hall, held meetings and celebrated festivals. After a thorough restoration by Rudolf Lempp from 1923 to 1926, the Old Town Hall is one of the most beautiful half-timbered buildings in southern Germany. The heavy oak construction of the Alemannic wooden construction excellently illustrates the classical binder system of the Swabian man. No less important is the splendid showpiece, which the Renaissance master builder Heinrich Schickardt from Wiirttemberg 1586 to 1589 set the gothic half-timbered construction on the north side towards the town hall square. The curly gable with the double astronomical clock and the elegant turret stands in charming contrast to the massive half-timbered building. (Text: City of Esslingen am Neckar)
