In March 1956 the first rescue mission took place in alpine terrain - in 2016 the Austrian Air Police celebrates its 60th anniversary. Following the signing of the Austrian State Treaty in 1955, the flight ban was lifted and the flight police department was established in the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Initially, the rescue was in the foreground. From 1956 with fixed-wing aircraft in use, helicopters were increasingly used at the beginning of the sixties. In 2001, the rescue and ambulance flights were outsourced from the immediate remit of the Ministry of Interior to a private air rescue service. Based on alpine rescue aviation, so-called flight operations units were set up throughout Germany within two decades. Their crews and helicopters are used not only for rescue and rescue operations but also for flight operations in the interest of maintaining public order, peace and security. Special security tasks are also carried out in the area of civil defense, such as the support of fire brigades by firefighting from the air or other natural disasters. In the course of relief and rescue operations, ropeways in difficult alpine terrain or the search for departing persons are still being carried out by the flight police. At European level, participation in bilateral police cooperation operations and the European border agency FRONTEX are becoming increasingly important. The motive of the special stamp is to visually represent the time sheet of the 60-year history of the flight police in Austria by the combination of the two photos. A historical photograph of the helicopter Agusta Bell 47 G2 was used for this purpose and a Eurocopter EC 135 P2 + Multirole standard helicopter was used as the current image.
