Following the "World Record Marche" (entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the World's Fastest Stamp) and a series of thematic reissues, the 2008 European Football Championship special stamp now marks the philatelic end of UEFA EURO 2008 ™. Flashback: When the kick-off for the European Football Championship 2008 took place on June 7 of this year, the enthusiasm for "round leather" knew no bounds. Weeks before, there was high spirits throughout the country; a veritable hype staged by the media, the organizers and numerous companies not only put football fans in a frenetic expectation. After the Austrian national team had already retired after the preliminary round matches, the exciting thumbst focused on the respective foreign teams to be favored - most recently on the two final opponents Germany and Spain. Finally, on 29 June, the final of the UEFA EURO 2008 ™ at the sold-out Vienna Ernst Happel Stadium, the mood was at its peak. One thing is for sure: the Spaniards, who were clearly superior for much of the match, thrilled the audience not only with their skills but also with their wit - and thanks to a goal from Fernando Torres in the 33rd minute, they finally won their first title in a major tournament to cheer since the European Championship in 1964. With this victory, the Spanish kickers not only guaranteed their coach Luis Aragones a wonderful farewell, they also wrote themselves forever in the annals of football history. The images of the subsequent victory celebration, the congratulations of the numerous guests of honor and the exuberant cheers of the successful Spanish players and their fans went around the world. In an impressive way they show the fascination and emotion of the sport. The motive of the new special stamp also tries to communicate this in a philatelic way: the laughing captain of the Spanish team, goalkeeper Iker Casillas, stands for his team, full of exuberant joy the UEFA Cup in the air. Felicitaciones a Espana!
