On 1 June 1998, the European Central Bank (ECB) opened in Frankfurt am Main. This is an important building block for the introduction of the common currency »EURO«. The legal basis of the European Economic and Monetary Union is the Treaty on European Union (EU), signed on 7 February 1992 in Maastricht by European leaders. The ECB in Frankfurt will have about 500 employees by the end of 1998, coming from all 15 EU Member States.
