In 2010, Argentina was guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The South American country has produced many world-famous writers. As a representative of these writers, the life and work of Jorge Luis Borges is acknowledged because of his ties to Germany. Born on August 24, 1899 in Buenos Aires, he lived from 1914 to 1921 in Switzerland and Spain. In Geneva he learned German and read poems by Heine. Borges was a master translator, publisher and co-author of numerous literary publications, dreaded polemicist, cinema critic, propagandist of European literature in popular magazines and - last but not least - poet and essayist. As one of the greatest writers of all time, he died on June 14, 1986 in Geneva, leaving behind nearly 70 published works.
