The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark each have a share of the Wadden Sea. In order to ensure the preservation of as many species-rich domestic animal and plant populations as possible, the corresponding German federal states have declared their share of the Wadden Sea national parks. These include: the Lower Saxon, the Hamburg and the Holstein Wadden Sea, where nature is largely left to its own devices. These unique protected areas of dunes, salt marshes and islands cover a total of approximately 7,300 square kilometers. The approximately 2,000 species of animals in the mudflat include shells, snails and seals as well as rare birds that live there all year round or rest on their train to the south.
