The stamp has as motif the Christ bearer, St. Christophorus, who according to legend was supposed to carry the baby Jesus through a river. The weight of the child, however, grew larger and larger, that the man was pushed under water, and so was baptized by Christ. Christophorus is now considered the patron saint of pilots and skippers. The knock-on proceeds from the sale of the special stamps benefited the aid organization Ludwigshafen.
