Historic Town Halls With the pictures of historic town halls, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four multicolored special postage stamps. Special cancellation from February 22 to April 21, 1983 Historic Town Halls 10-pfennig value: Stolberg (Harz) Nestled in the narrow Harz countryside lies the town of Stolberg. Since the 13th century, the place developed at the foot of the castle of the Counts of Stolberg. From the intersection of the valley roads of three intersecting valleys grew a triangular marketplace on which the town hall was built in 1482. Nestled close to the valley slope, the building follows the curvy side of the square in its front. Above the two basement levels, the upper main storey protrudes and is ornamented by the beautiful timbers of the half-timbered part. Around 1600, the town hall was renovated and rebuilt, as you can see in the architecture and the Renaissance decorations, especially in the basement. The special feature of the Stolberg town hall is that there are no stairs in its interior. You reach the upper floors via a broad staircase that leads from the market square to the town church. On the fog side of the town hall are the entrances to the Council Chamber and the other offices.
