The border mountains between Pinzgau and Bavaria are called the Steinerne Meer. The nature reserve comprises a 160 km2 high plateau, a strongly karstified calcareous plateau, which in the south by higher elevations such. the 2653 m high Schml nieldspitze is limited. North of the mountain range in Berchtesgadener Land lies the legendary, picturesque Königsee. South of the mountains lies the Pinzgau, which is identical to the political district Zell am See. The area is almost all sides only accessible through passes: from the north over the Steinpass, from the west over the Grießenpass, the pass Strub, the pass Thurn, the Gerlospass and from the south over the Felber Tauern (tunnel) and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Probably Only by this geographic position has a very specific construction of the farms emerged. In addition to the Paarhof (separate commercial and residential buildings), there is often the one-man house with a chapel and smaller outbuildings. The ground floor or the kitchen are bricked, the upper floor is almost always a block building with wraparound balcony. Above the entrance there are often fresco medallions, on the roofs are wooden belfries, at the top of which a cock indicates the wind direction. Very often fires have destroyed old buildings. The reconstruction took place then especially after the wars because of lack of money only very much simpler. A careful processing of the farm forms can be admired in the Salzburg Open Air Museum in Großgmain near Salzburg.
