Suhl hunting guns With illustrations of Suhl hunting weapons, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multi-colored special postage stamps in two se-tenant prints. The historical rifles come from the collection of the Museum of Arms Suhl, which was opened on 5 May 1971 on the occasion of the European Championships in shooting. This special museum has the task of collecting and maintaining historical handguns as well as researching their history. The exhibition of the museum gives an overview of 500 years development of small arms and the history of the productive forces in this craft and industry branch. The collection items include rifles, handguns, and accessories for hunting, sporting, military, and civilian use from many countries around the world. 5 Pfennig value: wheel lock rifle, 1630 In the time of the 30-year war there were already in Suhl a mass production of rifles and particularly rifle barrels, which were delivered in many countries of Europe. The wheel lock rifle is a typical weapon from the first half of the 17th century. The type pictured has become known by the term "Müllerbüchse". The weapon has a hand-forged barrel made of iron, the outside is honed octagonal and inside has seven star-shaped features. The wheel lock rifle with inside wheel has a smooth shot plate. Rooster, pan lid and spring are decorated by blacksmith work. All fittings of the weapon are made of iron. The rifle has a German Stechschloß. The stock consists of smooth, polished walnut wood. The corresponding cross-shaped key was used to tension the wheel lock and was at the same time a universal tool. With the key, a simple powder test for usability of the gunpowder could be carried out.
