International Year of the Child 1979 On the occasion of the International Year of the Child 1979, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues two multicolored special postage stamps. 1979 - International Year of the Child The XXXI. On 21 December 1976, UN General Assembly Resolution 31/169 decided to proclaim 1979 the International Year of the Child. With this decision, the UN not only kept an eye on the period of 1979, but also intended to launch a forward-looking, ongoing process. At present, over four billion people live on our planet - half of them are children. According to the UN, more than 350 million children are still lacking the necessities of life, starving children every day as a result of total malnutrition. In many developing countries today, the majority of children - due to centuries of colonial oppression and decades of imperialist exploitation - lack adequate and adequate nutrition, medical care and primary education. In the capital-dominated countries, it is precisely the children who suffer most severely from the effects of the crisis and inflation. Uncountable are the children who suffer from hunger, lack of health care, who have no access to education, who constantly live in social insecurity. Child labor, child maltreatment, baby trade, child prostitution, drug addiction, child and juvenile delinquency - all this is part of everyday capitalist life and reveals the misanthropy of the imperialist system. In our state, the German Democratic Republic, caring for the well-being of children, full and comprehensive protection of their rights has always been one of the main tasks of society as a whole. For our socialist state, in its thirty-year existence, it has always been the supreme law to mobilize all the forces of society for the welfare of its children, as the nation's most precious asset, and to guarantee them a happy and carefree childhood with a secure future. The German Democratic Republic, in which the principles enshrined in the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child are constitutionally anchored and implemented in life from the very beginning, participates under the slogan: "For a happy childhood in a world of peace - for international friendship international solidarity "active in the International Year of the Child. As one of its main tasks, the German Democratic Republic considers it to give the young states in Africa, Asia and Latin America increased assistance and support in building a new life and to actively support the fight against racism, apartheid, neo-colonialism and imperialist exploitation.
