Lighthouses on the coast of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues five multicolored special postage stamps depicting lighthouses along the coast of the GDR. The stamps also show excerpts from the map of the Seydrographic Service of the GDR with the respective locations of the lighthouses. The prevailing hydrographic conditions in coastal waters therefore require an increase in traffic safety at sea. The beacons are one of the most important foundations for fulfilling this requirement. Its origin - as the oldest fixed traffic safety of shipping - goes back to the time of antiquity. Form and building material have changed over the centuries. The technology has also kept pace - and the scientific findings in the field of electronics, optics and lighting technology will be further developed in the future. Despite the use of radar in maritime shipping, the responsibility of nautical security of the sea routes through beacons has increased many times over. With the publication of special postage stamps with motifs of striking fixed sea symbols of the GDR, the constant readiness of the beacon staff and the importance of the lighthouses in the service of shipping are acknowledged. 10-pfennig lighthouse Buk, 95 years old, built on a 78 m high mountain near Kühlungsborn, 1.3 nm south of the Buk-Spitze. The building is a red, round tower with a reddish brown dome and a 4 m wide, white ring stripe at the top; on its southern side is the guard house.
