In the northern Flachgau, only 30 kilometers from Salzburg, are place and monastery Michaelbeuern. The founding period of the Benedictine monastery is the first half of the 8th century. Especially important for the Michaelbeuern Abbey was the education sector. For example, a convent school dates back to the 13th century, and in the 17th century, a philosophical-theological school was established, which was closely linked to the Benedictine University in Salzburg. Today, the monastery not only seeks to be a cultural holder but also to meet the needs of contemporary pastoral work by continuing a school, boarding school and setting up a retreat and education center. Art lovers can especially enjoy the Baroque style "Triumphaltar", commissioned by Abbot Ämilian Sengmüller (1676-1696) and created by the sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler and the painter Johann Michael Rottmayr.
