The founder of the order John de Deo was born in 1495 in the small Portuguese town of Montemor o Novo. After a busy life in 1539 he founded a hospital with 46 beds in Granada. It was the beginning of the religious community of the "Brothers of Mercy". In 1760, the introduction of the Brothers of Mercy took place in Eisenstadt. Initially, only 8 beds were available; today, their hospital there is equipped with over 485 beds and state-of-the-art medical standards for patient care. An architectural treasure is the baroque church in the southwest corner of the hospital complex, which was built in its present form in 1739. In the musical field, the order was closely connected with Joseph Haydn, who wrote the "Kleine Orgelsolomesse" in B flat major with the title "Missa brevis Sti. Joannis de Deo "wrote an immortal piece of music for the friars in Eisenstadt.
