The "Hohe Tauern National Park" stretches across the lands of Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol, between the source jumps of the Isel, Möll, Salzach and Mur. Due to its mineral wealth, numerous claims have been asserted in recent decades, but the threat of exploitation was prevented by law. The focus was on the preservation of the primeval landscape, the cultivation of the cultural landscape, science and research, environmental education and recreation as well as recreation. The base of the national park covers 1,800 km2 and consists of a core and outer zone. The outer zone, a cultivated natural landscape cultivated by mountain farmers, fascinated by flowery pastures and mountain meadows. It is also the habitat of ibex, white-headed vulture and the reintroduced bearded vulture. The "Umbalfälle" and "Krimmler Wasserfälle" determine the landscape. In the core zone, ensuring the free, natural development of ecosystems for reasons of nature conservation has priority. Here the visitor will find a magnificent mountain landscape with quiet mountain lakes and impressive glaciers. The "Hohe Tauern National Park" has an ecological role model throughout Europe. Alternative technologies, waste prevention and the reduction of individual traffic have been successfully realized. The research benefits the region as a versatile outdoor laboratory for long-term observations and documentation.
