The first newspaper stamps in Austria were issued in 1851 and show a Mercury head. On the imprint of nominal values has been omitted, instead, the purpose of use defined by the colors. In total there were 4 colors. Blue was used for shipping by a newspaper, yellow for 10 and pink for 30. The highest value was the vermillion Merkur brand, which corresponded to 30 kreuzer and was used for parcels of 50 newspapers. Since hardly anyone needed so many newspapers was and is this mark very rare. Today, the "vermilion Merkur" is by far the most valuable brand in Austria.
