International Women's Day is celebrated worldwide by various women's organizations on 8 March. The idea was already launched on 27 August 1910 - by the German women's rights activist Clara Zetkin at the International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen. Accordingly, March 8 is celebrated by women around the world as "their day" commemorating their hard-won victories, while drawing public attention to the many inequalities in society and the labor market. In fact, there are still some shocking gender inequities - the fight for women's dignity and against exploitation, trafficking and violence must continue unabated. Since the United Nations Conference on Human Rights in Vienna in 1993, women's rights at international level have been considered human rights. Nevertheless, the list of discrimination against women does not get shorter. For many women worldwide, especially the phenomenon of violence is a sad reality of life. Physical, mental, sexual, but also economic violence is increasing and affects women of all cultures, socioeconomic levels and ages. The statistics speak volumes: even in Austria, every fifth woman is a victim of violence once in her life. In 95 percent of cases, the offender is male and comes from the social neighborhood. These facts challenge us in many ways, because acts of violence should not be an internal family affair - and they should never be called an "unavoidable side of life"! Violence is a complex issue and a crucial social mechanism that keeps women in a subordinate position. Acute and long-term consequences for mental and physical health often have a massive impact on everyday work and careers. Austrian Post AG, in agreement with the Union of Post and Telecommunications Officers, has declared the causal fight against violence and respect for the lives of women a top priority. The new special stamp "No violence against women" is a visible sign of a large number of women-supporting measures.
