The Swedish chemist and industrialist Nobel (1833-1896) erected the Nobel Foundation in his will. Annually, on the anniversary of Nobel's death (December 10), the interest of around SEK 31 million will be distributed as the Nobel Prize for the five most important achievements in the field of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peoples' peace regardless of the nationality of the award winner. The series honors the Nobel Prize winners of German literature Gerhart Hauptmann, Hermann Hesse and Thomas Mann. Hermann Hesse was born on 2.7.1877 in Calw, son of a German-Baltic missionary preacher and a Swabian-Swiss Indian-born missionary daughter. He spends a difficult youth in Calw rebelling against the authority of parents and the school until suicide attempt. After attending school in Basel, Calw and Göppingen Hesse 1891 is included in the seminar in Maulbronn, but he escapes after a short time. He comes to a mechanic apprenticeship and lives after a bookseller apprenticeship in Tübingen since 1899 as a bookseller and antiquarian in Basel. After his first literary successes, he became a freelance writer and settled in 1904 in Gaienhofen on Lake Constance. In 1911 he embarks on an India trip, a country that will play an important role in his work. In 1912 he moved to Bern and worked in the prisoner of war service during the First World War. Since 1919 he has lived in seclusion in Montagnola, near Lake Lugano, and in 1923 he became a Swiss citizen. In 1946 he receives the Nobel Prize for Literature. On 9.8.1962 Hesse dies in Montagnola and is buried in San Abbondio. Hesse was above all a novelist, narrator and poet.
