Deep-sea ships of the GDR The Ministry of Postal and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multi-colored special postage stamps depicting seagoing ships of the GDR. 25 Pfennig value: Steamer "Vorwärts", first merchant ship of the GDR The ship lay at the end of the Second World War on the ship cemetery with Wismar. It was the 1903 built on the Neptune shipyard "Grete Cords". In the spring of 1950, the ship was towed to Stralsund to the then state-owned yard, to be made seaworthy again. In addition to the necessary repairs, extensive modifications were made. On 13 October 1950, the ship was put under service under the symbolic name "forward" as the first merchant ship of the GDR. It is 67 m long, 9.5 m wide and has a capacity of 1,550 t with a draft of 4.3 m. His speed was 8 knots (14.8 km / h). The steamboat was used in particular in the general cargo traffic in the Baltic Sea area.
