Orchid Cultures of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored special signs: Orchid Cultures of the German Democratic Republic Cultured living and living include cut flowers and potted plants. Orchids occupy a special position. They are considered the most precious flowers. The desire of people to enjoy their beauty is understandable and welcome. Not only the demand for orchid cut flowers, but also for orchid plants is increasing. The producer groups of horticulture on a state, parastatal and cooperative basis in the GDR endeavor to supply the population continuously with orchid cut flowers. How difficult it is to grow orchids is shown by the fact that the cultivation of orchid plants from seeds takes 5 to 8 years. More and more the occupation with orchids becomes a nice, general educational leisure activity. The selection of the motifs of the special postage stamps is oriented in two directions: they show orchids as cut flowers and as herbal collectibles. They show orchids that are either cut flowers or botanically interesting. 10 Pfennig value: Paphiopedilum albertianum Paphiopedilum (Lady's slipper) is one of the most popular and durable orchid cut flowers. The pictured hybrid was created in 1892 in Belgium. In the emerging from her new breeding (as shown), it still has significance.
