Karol Józef Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II since his election on 16 October 1978, was born on 18 May 1920 in Wadowice, a small town near Krakow. He graduated from high school in Wadowice and in 1938 began his studies at the Krakow University. After the German invasion in 1939, he had to earn a living as a factory worker. In 1942, when he recognized his vocation to the priesthood, he entered the secret seminar of Krakow established by Cardinal Sapieha. On November 1, 1946, he was ordained a priest. By Pope Pius XII. Wojtyla was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow on 4 July 1958. During the Council, he was on 13 January 1964 under Pope Paul VI. Archbishop of Krakow, received on 28 June 1967 in the series of Cardinals. On October 16, 1978, Archbishop Wojtila became the first non-Italian to have been elected pope for 455 years. He called himself after his predecessor John Paul II. As Pope, he has set a record of beatifications (1314) and canonizations (476). In eight consistories he created 201 cardinals. He has completed more than 100 trips abroad and 150 trips within Italy. His pontificate was already in his lifetime as one of the longest in church history. Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005 at 9:37 pm at the age of 84.
