In the middle of downtown Stuttgart, in the immediate vicinity of the old classicist state gallery, the Neue Staatsgalerie was opened in 1984 as an extension. The Glasgow star architect James Stirling (1926-1992) created an outstanding example of postmodern architecture. It impresses particularly by its sensitive terraced integration into the hillside. Stirling linked historical elements and new forms. Particularly striking is the mighty glass window front. Inside, there are 15 skylight rooms covering 2,200 square meters. They are arranged in the manner of the old state gallery strictly U-shaped. A centrally located open rotunda, colossal columns, gables and horizontal upper beams stage the extension as a public building that has its own experience value.
