In the Bamberger Dom one finds on a column the so-called Bamberger Reiter. The almost life-size stone figure was created in the 13th century by an unknown master. Controversial is still who the figure represents. Although scholars agree that the statue is a pinnacle of medieval sculpture, there is disagreement in the interpretation of the work of art. The majority recognized in him King Stephen the saint of Hungary, the brother-in-law of Emperor Henry II. The rider wears a royal crown and is wrapped in a lavish coat. Above the head of the rider is a canopy. The figure was originally painted, as research showed. During a cleaning in the 19th century, old paint remnants of this original painting were removed.
