Neuruppin, with its many buildings in the early Classicist style, is an architecturally and urbanistically unique city. On December 30, 1819, the journalist and poet Theodor Fontane was born in the Löwenapotheke. Until 1849 he worked as a pharmacist, then as a journalist. His literary works such as "Frau Jenny Treibel" (1892), "Effi Briest" (1895) or his poem "Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland" (1889) became classics. With his famous travelogues »Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg« (1862) he also set a literary monument to his hometown. On June 8, 1907, the inhabitants unveiled the Fontane monument on the southern edge of the city. It was created by the sculptor Max Wiese, who also designed the Schinkel monument and the Jahn Loose monument in Neuruppin.
