The layout of the city of Wismar, which dates back to the early 13th century, has remained virtually unchanged to this day. The gable houses characterize the cityscape as a type of Hanseatic merchant house. Their street gables are often splendidly decorated. The houses were designed so that very different uses under one roof were possible: living, working and representing in the high floor of the ground floor, storage of merchandise in the storage floors under the roof and living in a courtyard wing. Separation into main, side and courtyard buildings was thereby avoided. As part of the historic city center of Wismar, the gabled houses were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 27, 2002.
