This special stamp series was intended to show a section of the development of the Austrian coat of arms. The best insight about coats of arms is obtained from seals, later from coats of arms and heraldic books, from coins, from representations on art monuments and from chronical descriptions. A coat of arms was created from the official coat of arms of the prince. The first value level of the stamp series shows the front of the seal, as it appears from 1230 to documents of Duke Frederick II. As you can see, the shield of the right-wing mounted ruler carries the bandage or bar. The prince wears a barrel helmet on his head, a long wrinkled tunic, in his left hand the triangular shield, in the right the pennant-shaped banner. At the neck the tank shirt is still recognizable. The seal inscription reads: "Fridericus dei Gracia dux Austriae" (Frederick of God's Grace Duke of Austria).
