The joint provincial exhibition of Salzburg in Mattsee and the Free State of Bavaria in Rosenheim took place from 18 May to 6 November 1988. It had the moving period of migration after the withdrawal of the Huns to the supremacy of the Frankish kingdom under Charlemagne to content. Two historical events set the time frame for this exhibition. In 488 King Odoakar, who had taken over Rome in 476, gave the order to withdraw the threatened Romansh population from the area between the Danube and the Alps. By the year 788 ended the first significant epoch of Bavarian history. During this time, all the foundations were created that characterize and connect Altbayern and Austria until today. That is why the Austrian province of Salzburg, which emerged from the Bavarian Archdiocese of 798, and the Free State of Bavaria took this 1200th anniversary as an opportunity to hold a major exhibition together for the first time.
