The returnees, who only returned from captivity to Austria in the fifties, had many difficulties. Their families usually lived in great financial distress, and the returnees were without sufficient funds until they were reintegrated into the work process. For example, public sector support has often been the only way to overcome initial difficulties. The returnees turned to the Federal Ministry of the Interior months after arriving in Austria to find the support they needed to cope with their financial situation. Unfortunately, due to the budgetary situation at that time, it was not possible to adequately provide this help. This problem prompted the Federal Ministry of the Interior in 1955 to work for the publication of a special postage stamp with surcharge, the proceeds of which benefited this Austrian population.
