Special stamp series »Land parliaments in Germany«: Landtag Saarland The first Landtag of Saarland was constituted on 15 December 1947. Since then, the casino building from 1865 has been the seat of the Saarland parliament. Built according to the plans of the Cologne town master builder Julius Carl Raschdorff, a building of special architectural value was created in the neoclassical style. During World War I, the rooms were used as a military hospital. Towards the end of World War II the building was badly damaged by bombs. The French military government put the casino under receivership and assigned it to the Legislative Assembly - the predecessor of the state parliament - as the meeting place. Today, the Saarland Parliament, with its 51 members of parliament, the smallest parliament in all the federal states, meets in the former ballroom for regular plenary sessions.
