Just under 15 kilometers from the center of Kiel lies the Olympic Center in 1972. About the Olympic village of sailors at that time it was said: "Never before were sailors, officials and journalists so close to the harbor and moorings." Technically, the center still offers best conditions. For the excellent logistics, the proof is provided every year during the Kieler Woche. Around 3,000 sailors with about 1,300 boats are to be looked after and more than 200 journalists work in the press center. Numerous world and European championships, national and international sailing regattas prove the worldwide appreciation of the Kiel sailing area every year. The yachtsmen will find everything they need for their tough sport: boat huts, saunas, gymnastics facilities, workshops, a superbly equipped harbor with 850 berths in the water and 350 berths in the countryside; But you will also find peace here in order to optimally prepare for the competitions. The leisure and performance center, which serves mainly the sailors as a base, was expanded and modernized in 1984 for more than two million marks. New accommodations for sailors and coaches have emerged, including kitchens, training and recreation rooms, and better sanitation. In the huge boat hall new rooms were installed: textile shower, massage room, fatigue basins, sauna and relaxation room. A new workshop allows sailors to take care of their boats. The storage area for boats, masts, cranes and other equipment has been greatly expanded. Since 1989 Schilksee is affiliated to the system of Olympic training centers and belongs to the Olympic training center Hamburg / Kiel. A weight room with equipment specifically designed to meet the needs of sailors and ensure medical and physiotherapy care has been set up. (Text: Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe, Frankfurt am Main)
