In 1994, the Olympic Winter Games are celebrated for the 17th time. For the first time, the decision of the IOC session of 1986 in Lausanne is used: From 1992, the Olympic Games take place every two years, alternately summer and winter games. Venue for the 1994 Winter Olympics (12 to 27 February 1994) is the Norwegian town of Lillehammer, while the ice sports competitions are held in Hamar, 60 km away. Thus, the winter games after 1952 in Oslo for the second time in Scandinavia to visit, the country of origin of many winter sports. In the statistics, the games of 1924 appear in Chamonix as the first Olympic Winter Games, which were initially carried out on a trial basis, but due to the great success of the following year were subsequently officially recognized. At the same time, during its session in Prague, the IOC took the decision to host Winter Games in the year of the Olympic Games. Not only the increase in the number of participants - in Lillehammer more than 2,000 athletes from over 70 countries are expected (Chamonix: 254 athletes from 16 countries) - but also the expansion of the competition program, based on which in Lillehammer the winners in 61 competitions are determined ( Chamonix: 16 competitions), impressively testify to the appreciation that the Winter Games are now enjoying within the Olympic movement. From the beginning figure skating was represented in the program of the Winter Games, the kind of sport that draws its charm above all from the interplay of speed and aesthetics, dynamics and artistic expressions. Certainly the decisions in the competitions of figure skating will once again take center stage in 1994 in the interest of millions of spectators worldwide.
