The postage stamp series »For Sport« is dedicated in 1996 to the anniversary »100 Years of the Olympic Games«. The games of the first modern Olympiad in Athens lasted from 6 to 15 April 1896. 295 athletes from 13 countries participated in a total of 43 competitions in 9 sports. The summer games of XXVI. Olympics will take place from July 19, 1996 to August 4, 1996 in Atlanta. Around 10,000 athletes from 197 countries will participate in 271 competitions in 26 sports. The four postage stamps issued for this occasion honor outstanding German Olympic champions. Carl Schuhmann (1869-1946) was the first German Olympic champion ever. He was Olympic champion in wrestling and single Olympic champion in the horse jump. With the team, he was Olympic champion in stretching and in the barnastics and thus brought a total of four Olympic victories from Athens to the Spree.
