With the issue of special stamps with surcharges in favor of the »Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe«, the tasks of the foundation in the social and in the field of competitive sports are supported. Rowing - a classic and fair team sport - is one of the Olympic sports. The German rowers are still ranked among the best in the world after their clear superiority at the Olympic Games 1936 and the World Championships 1962 in Lucerne (5 out of 7 possible gold medals). In international comparison, the German Rowing Association is in third place among the men. Since Montreal 1976, the double quad without a helmsman, the motif of this special stamp, as the eighth type of boat to the Olympic rowing program, and the women's rowing is since 1976 Olympic. The internationally defined route length is 2,000 m for men, 1,000 m for women. In the Federal Republic, there are about ten regatta courses that meet international requirements, including Ratzeburg, Essen, Duisburg, Cologne and the Munich Olympiastrecke, where the 1981 Rowing World Championships take place. In addition, another 50 routes serve regional and national competitions. Rowing is a strength and endurance sport at the same time and therefore places the highest demands on the overall physical condition of the athletes. The training programs of the German Rowing Association are developed together with the athletes and provide for top teams a daily training throughout the year. Most of the 350 rowing clubs in the German Rowing Association have developed in addition to the racing rowing activities in the wide and recreational sports. Rowing is therefore well suited as a family sport, in which the boathouses with all their manifold possibilities stand in the center of the sportive and social life of the clubs.
