The reason for this special stamp is the XXIII. International Championship in the Military Pentathlon, which took place in the period from 13 to 18 August 1973 at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. The organizer was the International Military Sports Federation (CISM), which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1973. The purpose and aim of this association was to promote military sport in the world, true to the motto of "friendship through sport", to establish friendly relations between the armed forces of the various countries and thereby contribute to the worldwide efforts to achieve a universal peace. A key point in CISM's program was the International Military Championships in 27 sports. The championships were held alternately in the individual member countries. In the anniversary year Austria was entrusted with the execution of the military pentathlon. The five completely different sports disciplines were shooting, obstacle course, obstacle swimming, goal and distance throw as well as off-road running. The brand image shows the steeplechase that was chosen because it is considered the most technically challenging and high-performance competition in the military pentathlon.
