As a successor to the League of Nations, the United Nations was founded by 51 states in the last months of World War II. The Charter was ratified by the five permanent members of the Security Council and the majority of the remaining 46 states on 24 October 1945. In keeping with the occasion, the United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 October each year. In 1989, the United Nations had 159 member states, including 130 developing countries. The six principal organs of the United Nations are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice, the Treuhandrat and the Secretariat. The Vienna International Center (VIC) comprises several members of the UN family. The four largest are the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV), which is part of a number of UN units based here, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA). The brand image shows the UNO-CITY building completed in 1979, which stands on a 180 000 m2 site with extraterritorial status. The brand itself has a disturbing "flaw": the UN emblem is never red, but always in (light) blue color.
