Permanent stamp series »Sights« Rathaus Hildesheim Experts suspect the construction of the Hildesheim town hall between 1268 and 1290. Traders sold their goods both in front of and in the building. It was not only a meeting place for councilors and a venue for festivities, but also a prison and a court. The southern part of the building dates from the 13th to the 14th century, while the central part with triangular gable and pointed arched windows was built after 1441 and the round, tower-shaped half-timbered one at the southwest corner only in 1526. From 1883 to 1892 city architect Schwartz redesigned the town hall and expanded it. Aviation bombs destroyed the building on March 22, 1945 largely. After being rebuilt with small changes, the Hildesheim city council has been meeting there since November 13, 1954.
