»For more safety on the road« is more than an appeal for everyone. For more safety on our roads is a permanent task. Road safety itself is a complex task inextricably linked to modern road traffic, and road safety is one of the central concerns of this federal government's transport policy. Traffic safety can not be enforced by ever new, ever stricter laws and regulations. Rather, through continuous cooperation of all who are of good will, we need to make further improvements on our roads. In this respect, the Federal Government attaches great importance to cooperation with the associations of road safety work. Worth mentioning here is the German Traffic Safety Council e.V. and its members. This includes u. a. also the German Traffic Watch e.V. with its subdivisions on state, district and local levels. The »cooperation of all« happens through the joint implementation of target group programs in the area of traffic education and information; These range from preschool children to older people in traffic. Successes of the consistent road safety policy of the Federal Government are clear. Since the 1970s, the number of road deaths in the Federal Republic of Germany has fallen by half, although the number of motor vehicles has more than doubled since then. New challenges have been added after the unification of the two German states due to the jump in inner-German passenger traffic. Road safety work, as we know it, did not exist until recently, especially in the new federal states. Our goal must be to get the good work done in the new Länder as quickly and efficiently as possible and to tackle the problems that are coming up. It is necessary to curb the dramatic increase in accidents that emerged in the first half of 1990. To be successful here requires the help of each individual. What is needed are partnership behavior and consideration. Not insisting on supposed rights helps avoid accidents. Rather, it is important to see in the other not the opponent, but the partner, the fellow man. The stamp's message is clear. It is important for every one of us to bring this message to life: for more safety on the road! (Text: Federal Minister of Transport, Bonn)
