Dresden Transport Museum The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes five multicolored postage stamps with illustrations from the Dresden Transport Museum. Special cancellation from September 13 to November 12, 1977 Transport Museum Dresden 35-pfennig value: First passenger steamship on the Oberelbe 1837 The first passenger steamship on the Upper Elbe, the "Queen Maria", was built according to plans and under the direction of the Dresden Professor Johann Andreas Schubert , In 1837 the steamboat started regular traffic between Dresden and Rathen or Dresden and Bad Schandau. The ship was built of sheet iron on iron frames. The steam boiler and the steam engine had to be changed several times, since they did not meet the requirements of a continuous operation. Despite this defect, the ship was in service until 1864. At the same time two other steamboats, the "King Albert" and the "Dresden", were built on the same shipyard, the Vogelwiese in Dresden, under the direction of Schubert. These three ships formed the basis for a continuous until today passenger steamship on the Upper Elbe.
