The »Upper Middle Rhine Valley« refers to a 65-kilometer section between Bingen, Rüdesheim and Koblenz, where the Rhine crosses the Rhenish Slate Mountains. It is the epitome of the romantic Rhine landscape and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Its special appearance is due to the natural shape of the river landscape and the design by humans. The landscape offers great cultural wealth - many castles, palaces and old villages line the shores. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley inspired many artists to representations and descriptions. including Heinrich Heine, whose poem "Loreley" (1823) became world famous.
