From the 8th to the 24th of February 2002, the nineteenth Winter Olympics will be held in Salt Lake City. More than 3,500 active and caregivers from over 80 countries will then be guests in the American city of Utah. The four motifs of the Olympic brands reflect the spectrum of the Olympic winter sports competitions, from biathlon, ice skating and ski jumping to sledding. The Salt Lake City program is the most comprehensive of all winter games so far - women's bobsledding and Skeleton Scooter racing are new sports for the first time. The German Olympic team, with a squad of 160-170 athletes, will attempt to build on Nagano's 1998 success. At that time, the German team won a total of 29 medals, including 12 gold, 9 silver and 8 bronze, making it the most successful participant. Salt Lake City's Olympic Park is a good place to repeat such a feat: a speed skating hall, the "Rice Eccles Olympic Stadium", which holds 50,000 spectators, an ice hockey arena and the Olympic one Village on the university campus of the city. Much of the Alpine and Nordic competition takes place at the Utah Winter Sports Center, near Park City. The visual appearance of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games is marked by a logo and three mascots. The logo symbolizes a crystal with three different color sections to illustrate the three basic elements of the Salt Lake City games: the Olympic flame and the athlete's courage, the relationship with the Navajo Indians and the cultures of the region, and the geological contrast of the region State of Utah, which consists of both desert and snow-capped mountains. The three mascots »Copper«, the coyote, »Powder«, the snow shoe, and »Coal«, the American black bear, were chosen for their symbolism of Native American culture. As a motto of the games, the organizers chose »Light the fire within«.
