In Austria, since about 1925, the gliding has developed rapidly. In 1929, the gliding center on Spitzerberg was built, in Zell am See a center for gliding in the Alps developed. The first championship, which was considered a World Cup, took place in 1937 at the Wasserkuppe with 31 participants. The XXI. Gliding World Championship 1989 in Wiener Neustadt was under a special symbolic innovation. For the first time the competitions could be flown across borders, after the then General Secretary of the Communist Party, Janos Kadar, had agreed to open the airspace for competition flights during the World Championships. Yet another World Cup event in 1989, this brand was dedicated. Skydiving as a modern sports combination developed from the disaster relief in the winter high mountains. The second World Championships in this discipline took place from 1 to 8 April 1989 in Damüls, Vorarlberg.
