A painting by Pieter Bruegel from 1565 shows a group of men curling, and as early as the 12th century, this sport is said to have been performed by Duke Leopold V. It is thus one of the oldest sports practiced in Central Europe. The Austrian Curling Association was founded on May 22, 1935. The sport distinguishes three different types of competition: the team game, the target shooting and the long-range shooting. In 1983, the first World Cup took place in Frankfurt am Main. In 1987, it was held in Brixen, where Austria's athletes offered outstanding performance. The venue of the international curling world championship 1990 was Vienna.
