Already in 1962, the first rowing world championships were held in Lucerne. Women were only from 1974 at this sporting event here. The World Federation of Rowers, founded on 25 June 1892 FISA, who also joined the Austrian Rowing Association (ÖRV) in 1947, governs these international competitions, performs world championships and, together with the IOC, through Olympic regattas. The 100th anniversary of the ÖRV and the new regatta course on the "New Danube" were powerful arguments to hand over the hosting of the World Championships in 1991 to the City of Vienna. The canoe, with its centuries-old tradition as a means of transport to the water, has established itself in competitive sports in our home country with the founding of the Austrian Kayaking Association. Many Austrian successes testify to the rapid development. The canoe junior World Championships, held for the fourth time since 1985, were held in Vienna for the first time in 1991.
