From 26. to 31. 7.1992 expects the International Association for Home Economics (IVHW) in the congress center of the city of Hannover guests from over 80 countries to its XVII. World Congress. Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker is patron of this event. The World Congress of the IVHW takes place every four years. In 1934, Germany was the last time host country. The IVHW is the only worldwide organization in the field of home economics. Today more than 200 institutions and many individuals are members of the association, founded in Switzerland in 1908. The XVII. World Congress is under the theme: »Households and families in focus: change and exchange«. The IVHW wants to bring households and families more into the public eye and thereby make a contribution to the Year of the Family 1994 proclaimed by the United Nations. As an international non-governmental organization, the IVHW has consultative status with several UN organizations. Everybody lives in a household, however he looks. Households, in interaction with the rest of society, set the course for health, environmental impact, social networks, life satisfaction, etc. Households make decisions about having children and raising children, about material and time resource use, lifestyles and value orientations. Particular attention is paid to the changing budgetary structure, the evolution from the multi-generational household to the small and individual households, and the changing needs of the community as a result of this evolution. The small and individual households have a much higher need for services, complementary services and social security. The congress will feature expert lectures by distinguished scholars and practitioners, political discussions by prominent professionals and politicians and workshops. Book fair, software fair, poster exhibition and a range of research reports provide comprehensive information. Evening events and the congress-accompanying "Living in Families" will also provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and get to know each other. The association hopes to improve understanding of Third World problems in particular. The World Congresses of the International Association for Home Economics ensure the cooperation of domestic teaching, research and practice at the international level. On them resolutions of global validity are worked out. For the implementation of the World Congress Hannover '92, the domestic associations have joined together in a promotion association in the Federal Republic of Germany. He is responsible for the congress organization. (Text: Gisela Goerdeler, German Housewives Association e.V., Bonn)
