World Shipping Day 1979 World Trade Day 1979 The German Ministry of Post and Telecommunications Issues a Multicolor Special Postage Stamp World Shipping Day 1979 At the suggestion of the Secretary-General of the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization - IMCO - the Inter-Governmental Advisory Maritime Organization Special Maritime Organization at its 38th Session 1977 decided to celebrate "World Maritime Day" annually on 17 March, the date of the entry into force of the IMCO Convention in 1958. Following this decision of the Council, 17 March 1978 was declared World's first day of navigation. The aim was to provide the Secretariat of IMCO, the Member States and the organizations working with IMCO with a special opportunity to introduce the public to IMCO and its activities. The proposal for the introduction of the World Navigation Day was fully supported by the German Democratic Republic, which has been actively involved since its membership in IMCO. This attitude stems, in particular, from the humanist concern of our socialist state to actively contribute to the protection of human life at sea and the protection of the marine environment. Furthermore, we consider the launch of this day as a clear expression of the appreciation of the work of all seafarers and those responsible and co-operatives of the shipping industry. Priorities for IMCO's work in 1979 include: - holding an international conference to discuss and draft a draft international convention on maritime search and rescue, - enactment • the International Convention on Standards for Training, Certification and Surveillance for Seafarers, • The International Maritime Safety Treaty, 1974, and the Protocol thereto • The Marine Pollution Convention, 1973, modified by the 1978 Protocol. The special stamp shows the world map with the main routes of VEB Deutfracht / Seereederei Rostock ships in the background and in the top left corner Emblem of the IMCO. In the foreground is a newly developed by the VEB Warnowwerft Warnemünde cargo ship for the transport of containers, general cargo and grain as well as heavy and semi-finished and presented in the background a modern ocean tug.
