Congress of the International Astronautical Federation in Dresden In 1990, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the GDR issued four multicolored postage stamps. Special cancellation from 2 October to 1 December 1990 XXXXI. Congress of the International Astronautical Federation, Dresden 1990 From the 6th to the 13th of October 1990 Dresden hosts the XXXXI. Congress of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). This non-governmental association of national societies and other organizations aims to promote the development of space research and space for peaceful purposes. Serving this purpose are the annual congresses, which bring together leading representatives of space agencies, cosmopolitans and astronauts to exchange scientific and technical information. In terms of content, the congresses are designed in cooperation with the International Astronautical Academy (IAA) and the International Institute for Space Law (IISL). The IAF, founded in 1950, currently has 111 organizations from 38 states as members, including as the host of the Dresden Congress the Space Research and Space Agency of the GDR. Organizers of the congress are the Institute for Cosmos Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and the German Research Institute for Aerospace of the FRG. A total of about 1,500 participants are expected to attend the congress in Dresden. Under the motto "Space for Peace and Progress", more than 700 lectures will be held in 23 symposia with 74 sessions, while 38 committees will complement the overall scientific program One of the thematic evening events will be dedicated to the status and perspectives of German space research Congress will host the International Space Technology Exhibition "Space 90." The motifs of the special postage stamps will be used in addition to a reference to the host city to characterize areas treated at IAF congresses: Earth Exploration, Cosmic Meteorology, Lunar Research, Planetary Research. Stylized Representation of Dresden Structures The congress venue is characterized by its world-famous ensemble of historic buildings, its significance as a center of science and culture, in the foreground the Kronentor das Zwingers, built by MD Pöppelmann between 1709 and 1732. On the left behind the Se mperoper (completion 1878) and the tower of the former catholic court church. On the right new buildings of Dresden: the Palace of Culture, the main venue of the congress, behind the TV tower.
