Race sledge World Championships 1985 in Oberhof For the XXIV race sled world championships 1985 in Oberhof the Ministry for post office and telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues a multicolored special postage stamp. Special cancellation from 22 January to 21 March 1985 World Championships in racing sledging in Oberhof 1985 The season of lugers has long begun. Everywhere fans of this fast-paced sport are preparing for the competition highlights of 1984/85. The highlight will be the World Championships, which will take place from 21 to 28 January 1985 in Oberhof (Thuringia). The International Racing Sled Association (FIL) awarded at its 29th Congress in Hammarstrand (Sweden) the orientation of the World Championships, which is currently held every two years to the host, after 1973 for the second time at Oberhof. The Sledge and Bobsled Association (DSBV) of the GDR, since 1956 a full member of the FIL, is considered since 1962 as the strongest sledging country in the world. As the DSBV Secretary General said in a press interview, the interest for the World Championships is very large. The organization office expects all member countries of the FIL to participate. Invitations were sent to 29 national associations in three continents. Of course, this obliges us to create the best conditions for the world's active people and to be a worthy host. Among the six artificially frozen luge runs in Europe, the Oberhofer Eisrinne is considered one of the most difficult. The summer break was used intensively to put the 1113-meter concrete runway with the 14 turns into an excellent condition with an average gradient of 9.2 percent. During the championship, the world champions in the disciplines men's single, women's singles and men's doubles will be determined. The International Luge Regulations (IRO) regulate the proper implementation of such competitions with their basic rules and statutes. Accordingly, for the one-seater competitions four races (including a night race) and for the two-seater competition two races are held. The ladies and double-seaters start together from a starting height and tackle eleven bends in their descent of 914 meters. The luge and racing equipment have developed in recent years in such a way that average speeds of up to 85 km / h from the men's start and 79 km / h from the ladies' start are possible on the groomed Oberhof piste. The top speeds are much higher. The track records are currently at 44.62 s for the men, 41.67 s for the ladies and 41.84 s for the doubles. At present, the DSBV provides the GDR with all interested countries with the facility for training options. Numerous national associations use the opportunity until the World Cup, so that a home advantage can no longer be spoken. Until the grand opening on January 25, 1985, many training runs will be brought down to the valley on the World Cup track in Oberhof.
