Interesting animals from the zoos and zoological gardens of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues eight multi-colored special postage stamps with pictures of interesting animals from the zoos and zoological gardens of the GDR. Interesting animals from the zoos and zoological gardens of the GDR 20-pfennig value: Panzernashorn, Tierpark Berlin One of the largest land mammals is the Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), which can be over four meters long and weigh up to 2,000 kg. The shoulder height reaches two meters in the bull. Striking is the plate-like folded skin, which looks as if the animal hung with armor plates, as once the horses of the knights. Noteworthy are also arranged in rows small increases, which seem like boat rivets. This pure herbivore, once spread across the entire north of the Indian subcontinent, is now limited in numbers to some nature reserves in the northeast, which unfortunately is only hundreds. Its eradication, caused by the disappearance of its marshy habitats and accelerated by poachers attributed to the rhino, the magical and healing power, is unlikely to be stopped. Fortunately, the breeding of this imposing species has been more successful in the zoos in recent years, so that there is some hope of saving the rhinoceros in the future. The two chisel-cut incisors in the lower jaw can be used as dangerous weapons. The adult rhinoceros has no other animal to fear. Unfortunately, the fatal anthrax of domestic cattle often jumps on the rhinos and rages terribly among their stocks.
